Hosted by our good friend, Dan Welsh, we will walk gently around Cedarbrook Farm where we will see nesting Eastern Bluebirds, wrens and other species. It should take about 2 hours. Directions: take Highway 6 north towards Guelph; approx. 14km north of Highway 403 turn left (west) on 8th Concession West; Cedarbrook Farm is approx. 8 km on the south side.

May 23, 2019 - Mt. Nemo CA to Kilbride Public School, Map 10

Hike Description:

We will follow main BT up escarpment into Mt. Nemo CA ( for lovely views of the countryside) and out along rural roads. We will continue on into Bronte Creek/Cedar Springs Valley. We will finish our hike climbing a strenuous stretch out of the valley and into the village of Kilbride. Driver(s) will be needed to drive back to starting point to recover shuttle car(s). Bring water, snacks and lunch. Bug spray may be necessary. Drivers need Conservation pass or fee to park at CA.

May 25, 2019 - Hilton Falls to Speyside E2E

Hike Description:

We will meet at the Pear Tree parking lot at Speyside and carpool to Hilton Falls. Please be prepared to pay the entry fee, unless you have a Conservation Halton pass.

We will hike from Hilton Falls to Speyside. This is a wonderful part of the trail, but it has challenging sections, with rocks and roots and along the edge of the escarpment. We're likely to see some Trillium and other spring flowers, so bring your camera along, as well as water and a lunch/snack.

May 28, 2019 - Tuesday Evening Not-the-Bruce Trail Hike

Hike Description:

In part, this hike follows the Bruce Trail in Grimsby (which too is a part of Iroquoia), but the second half follows an urban street along the base of the escarpment in order to make a loop which ends with one dandy climb.  Meet on the wide shoulder of Park Rd. at the corner of Ridge Road in Grimsby next to a long row of high cedar trees. We will meet in the north parking lot closest to Hwy 5 where washrooms are sometimes (?) available. The hike will follow the escarpment ridge along the main trail towards Waterdown and return via the Blue Trail. If conditions are favourable we will hike to the waterfalls off Waterdown Rd. Bring snack, water, sunscreen and bugspray. Refreshment stop at the Copper Kettle in Waterdown afterwards if you so choose and for anyone interested we will go on a tour of the True North Art Galley just around the corner. We can park in the lot at Walker's Line and No2 Side Road. Parking pass required. Hike up the Main Bruce Trail into the conservation area. Escarpment Edge Trail, South Loop/Bruce Trail and North Loop. No dogs. Bring water, hat, snack/lunch at Brock Harris Lookout. There is a short ladder as we ascend the escarpment. Pub/refreshment stop afterwards.

Talk about geology, trees, gigantic rocks, pot holes, a world famous whirlpool, this hike has them all. There is an optional drop out at 4 km before the somewhat difficult trail to the Whirlpool

June 10, 2019 - Mountain Brow and Wentworth Stairs Loop Extended Evening Walk

Hike Description:

We will be hiking the Mountain Brow Side Trail to where it meets the main Bruce Trail.  Then we will be returning on the main Bruce Trail, and then the fun part!  We get to climb up the Wentworth Stairs (all 500 of them!)   After the hike, there will be an optional ice cream stop.  This is the only time of the year that we have enough daylight to do a 10-11km hike as an evening walk, so come on out and enjoy the long evening daylight!  Hike Cancelled, if there is heavy rain.

Directions: Take Concession Street to Upper Wentworth and turn north toward the escarpment.  Keep right and the road becomes Mountain Park Ave. Park in the first parking lot on the left or on the street and we will meet at the top of the Wentworth Stairs.

Meet in the parking lot of Battlefield Park at the corner of King Street and Centennial Parkway, Stoney Creek.  From the QEW follow Centennial Pkwy south to where it intersects with King Street.  If coming from the Lincoln Alexander Pkwy and north on the Red Hill Valley Pkwy, turn right on King Street West and continue east to the intersection of King Street and Centennial.

We will carpool to Kingsview Drive off Mud Street on the mountain.  The hike overall is downhill, although the trail has ups and downs.  There are views of Lake Ontario and we pass by Felker's Falls.  There is one section where the descent is steeper.  A shorter but good hike for a hot summer day.

This loop hike includes the Gorge of Twenty Mile Creek, Ball's Falls, and the Upper Falls. The QEW is too congested to bother with. Here's a more pleasant drive: Follow Mud St. (which becomes Fly Rd.) east from Centennial Pkwy. in Upper Stoney Creek till it comes to a T-intersection at Victoria Ave. above Vineland. Turn right on Victoria Ave.  and then left on 6th Ave. (which is the entrance to Ball's Falls Conservation Area). Drive through the conservation area to the far side and turn left on Glen Rd. Follow Glen Rd. to the widening of the left shoulder before the road goes down the escarpment. Look for my bright blue Honda Civic. Wear boots and bring water. An optional pub stop will follow. Come Explore the beautiful Sixteen Mile Creek Valley in Oakville. This valley is a jewel in the middle of a busy urban area. The Sixteen Mile Creek winds its way through steep cliffs and woods. We will walk along the upper trails and then down onto the lower trails beside the creek. Some long and gentle hills. Bring a snack, water, insect repellent and sunscreen. Turn right on Fiddler's and go to the stop sign at Jerseyville Rd. Turn left on Jerseyville and go 1 km to the entrance to the Outdoor Pool on your right. Wear boots and bring water. To get there, take Governor's Rd. west from downtown Dundas to Pirie which is the last street on your right before reaching the entrance to Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Turn right on Pirie and then left on Newcombe. Follow Newcombe all the way to the bottom of the escarpment where it meets Davidson. Park curbside. Wear boots and bring water. Pub stop will follow.
