This hike features Grindstone Creek Valley and its steep embankments. The meeting place is the widening of Waterdown's Snake Rd. where the Bruce Trail crosses. Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton.  We will hike sections of the Bruce Trail as well as the trails of Iroquoia Heights C.A.  There will be weekly walks all summer.  Now we are all getting older we are not hiking as fast as we used to!

April 28, 2019 - Junior Hiker/Chedoke Rail Trail

Hike Description:

This hike will take us along the Bruce Trail/Chedoke Rail Trail as it climbs the Escarptment, overlooking Hamilton and Dundas. We will return via the Blue Side Trail along Scenic Drive. Meet in the parking lot of the Chedoke  Golf Course. Take the Aberdeen exit off the 403 and follow to past the rail overpass where you will turn right onto Sudholme and then left onto Beddoe and follow to the Golf Club. (Map 7). We will hike from Hilton Falls to Speyside. This is a wonderful part of the trail, but it has challenging sections, with rocks and roots and along the edge of the escarpment. We're likely to see some Trillium and other spring flowers, so bring your camera along, as well as water and a lunch/snack.

Hike Description:

Meet in the parking lot of Battlefield Park at the corner of King Street and Centennial Parkway, Stoney Creek.  From the QEW follow Centennial Pkwy south to where it intersects with King Street.  If coming from the Lincoln Alexander Pkwy and north on the Red Hill Valley Pkwy, turn right on King Street West and continue east to the intersection of King Street and Centennial.

We will carpool to Kingsview Drive off Mud Street on the mountain.  The hike overall is downhill, although the trail has ups and downs.  There are views of Lake Ontario and we pass by Felker's Falls.  There is one section where the descent is steeper.  A shorter but good hike for a hot summer day.

Here's a more pleasant drive: Follow Mud St. (which becomes Fly Rd.) east from Centennial Pkwy. in Upper Stoney Creek till it comes to a T-intersection at Victoria Ave. above Vineland. Turn right on Victoria Ave.  and then left on 6th Ave. (which is the entrance to Ball's Falls Conservation Area). Drive through the conservation area to the far side and turn left on Glen Rd. Follow Glen Rd. to the widening of the left shoulder before the road goes down the escarpment. Look for my bright blue Honda Civic. Wear boots and bring water. An optional pub stop will follow. Hike Description:

We will start the hike near the Whirlpool Golf Course ( free parking across from the WGC parking lot ) and hike along the top of the gorge to the stairs that lead down to the river. We will then hike along the river bank to the Whirlpool rapids and then climb back to the top of the gorge and back to the parking lot. This is a short hike but difficult terrain.

We will meet at the parking lot east of Hutches on Van Wagners Road at 9:00 AM and we will carpool to Niagara Falls

This loop hike takes in the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail, some bird breeding ponds, and Confederation Park. Park in the lot just to the right of Hutchie's on Van Wagner's Rd. Hike Description:

Meet for 9:30 am start at the Dundas Valley CA Trail Centre parking lot off Governor’s Road.  From the parking lot closest to the Trail Centre, we will carpool to the Tews Falls parking lot on Harvest Road.   If travelling on Hwy 8/King Street through Dundas, turn right onto Harvest Road.  If coming from Hwy 5, turn left onto Hwy 8/Brock Road, then left again at Harvest Road.  Hike will commence at Tews Falls and include Dundas Peak, Old Dundas Station Side Trail, and continue on Bruce Trail past the Dundas Valley Golf and Country Club back to the Dundas Valley CA Trail Centre.  Cars remaining at the Trail Centre, or parking at Tews Falls, must pay a parking fee or have a Hamilton Conservation Authority pass. This 11 km loop hike will take approximately 3.5 hours and is at a medium pace over easy terrain. There is no dropout point. No dogs please.
Depart: 10:00 am Last parking lot in Dundas Valley C.A. Hike will be modified if it is too hot!
Directions: From the 403 W take the Main St. W. Exit. Turn left onto Main St and travel to Osler Dr. Turn right and Follow Governor's Rd. Turn Left onto Governor's Rd and follow to the Dundas Valley C.A. at the edge of town. It will be on your left.
Hike Description: Several loops around Dundas Valley C.A. bring a snack, water, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Meet by the playground on Park Avenue in Greensville. Directions: take Hwy 8 north from Dundas or Brock Rd south from Hwy 5. Park Avenue is just south of Hw8 and 50 metres west of Bullocks Corners.

Hike with optional swim. We will hike from Greensville along Spencer's Creek and then clockwise around Christie Lake. At the beach we will swim (optional) and have a picnic lunch. Bring towel and swimsuit. There are changing rooms and a snack bar.

We'll do a loop hike in Dundas Valley on the trails between the Dundas Valley Trail Centre and the C.P.R. line. Park at the corner of Newcombe and Davidson in Dundas. To get there, take Governor's Rd. west from downtown Dundas to Pirie which is the last street on your right before reaching the entrance to Dundas Valley Conservation Area. Turn right on Pirie and then left on Newcombe. Follow Newcombe all the way to the bottom of the escarpment where it meets Davidson. Park curbside. Wear boots and bring water. Pub stop will follow. Take Meadowbrook to Jerseyville Side Rd and turn right. Just pass the high school the Little League Park is on the right at the bottom of the hill.

Location: At the Dunas and Mill St intersection in Waterdown, go south on Mill St. Smokey Hollow will be on your right just after the train bridge.

Meet at Davidson Blvd Side Trail. We will hike west along the main trail and then loop around the McCormack Trail (Dundas Valley CA). This is a short hike and includes two short but steep hills. Beautiful views of Dundas Valley and the Escarpment.

Directions: Take Governors Rd west from Dundas. Turn right on Davidson Blvd. Take Davidson Blvd north until it intersects with Newcombe Rd. The side trail is at this intersection.

The hike will take in parts of the main trail, Rockside side trail, Caledon Trailway, Winston Churchill side trail.

There will be time to visit Spirit Tree Estates Cidery. They have an excellent bakery. Hiking boots, water, lunch/snack, bug spray, sunscreen.

Hike Description:

Enter Kelso Conservation Area off Tremaine Rd and park by Halton Regional Museum. We will hike the main Bruce Trail by the Lime Kiln Ruins and along Escarpment Trail and follow main trail until we come back down the escarpment to parking lot. No dogs please.
